More than 130 alumni returned to campus this past Saturday for Forum for the Future, an initiative designed to engage young alumni with the life and leadership of the College. Now in its second year, the program not only provides an insider's view of topics faced by the College, but also enables a young generation of CMC alumni––on the cusp of their post-graduate careers––to become future leaders within the Alumni Association and the CMC community. The Forum convenes at this annual conference on campus, as well as through regular teleconferences.

    CMC-UCLA Inland Empire Forecast Conference
The second annual CMC-UCLA Inland Empire Forecast Conference, presenting the latest quarterly economic projections, was held on Tuesday at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario. Presentations by CMC faculty members, as well as other noted economists, made for an insightful and newsworthy conference. Forecasters say the region's economy will brighten (with predictions of the region's unemployment rates shrinking from 13 percent this year to 11.4 percent in 2013), but progress will be slow, says Marc Weidenmier, the William F. Podlich '66 Professor of Economics, George R. Roberts Fellow, and director of the Lowe Institute of Political Economy.

Celebrating the Fifth Anniversary of Transformative Robert A. Day Gift
Five years ago, in September 2007, the College announced Mr. Day's pledge of $200-million to support student scholars interested in pursuing careers in economics and finance. It was not only the largest recorded gift to a liberal arts institution, but was among the top 20 largest gifts ever given to a college or university.

  CIE's Launch Pad
What began as an ASCMC-sponsored club has now become the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, serving the 5C community. Last spring, CMC student entrepreneurs, both commercially focused and social-mission focused, approached KLI, the Robert Day School and the Dean of the Faculty to explore the possibility of formalizing a program for innovation and entrepreneurship. Under the direction of Von Tobel Professor of Economics Janet Kiholm Smith, entrepreneurial-minded students are now able to plug into a broader menu of resources, and even have their own dedicated space on campus.

The Daily Beast Features Living on One's Bus Tour Across the States
A month before they waved goodbye to CMC and packed a renovated school bus for their inspirational zigzag across the states, recent grads Chris Temple '12 and Zach Ingrasci '12 were premiering their rousing new film, Into Poverty: Living on One Dollar, at Pickford Auditorium. The screening and after-party would be good practice for the present: their in-progress, four-month road trip to American colleges and universities, where they are screening their movie and summoning this next generation to help end poverty.

Kyle Weiss `15 given World of Children Award/Youth Award

They say the third time is a charm, but we can't help but think it's just the start for this ambitious young CMCer, whose work at the helm of FUNDaFIELD continues to chalk up serious awards—this time the World of Children Award. It's the third huge honor that Weiss, 19, has been given for his efforts in building soccer fields in places too poor to develop their own.

Trustee George Roberts Talks Private Equity Firms on Bloomberg TV
In a major coup for the business channel, CMC Trustee George Roberts '66 P'93, also known as the "R" in KKR, spoke with Bloomberg TV's Jason Kelly on this past Monday. "George Roberts has never done any television interview … and leaves most of the public speaking to his partner Henry Kravis," noted Bloomberg reporter Cristina Alesci, "so it was amazing to see Jason get this interview."

En Massie: A Prominent Biographer Hosts Informal Chat with CMCers
The morning after his Athenaeum dinner address, Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer Robert K. Massie III sat with a group of students and faculty in Parents Library to talk candidly and informally about the process of writing. The famed writer also welcomed questions, happily offered advice to aspiring students, and told the story of how he was enlisted––even against his initial wishes––to write his newest biography, Catherine the Great: Portrait of a Woman (Random House, 2012). This short video captures some of those generous moments with Massie, whose visit to campus was sponsored by the family of Benjamin Z. Gould Center for Humanistic Studies.

Spring ITAB Trip Registration Deadline
Don't get us wrong––counting snowflakes back home in Colorado over winter break does have its appeal. But if you're a CMC go-getter who is tinkering with the idea of a career in the technology field, you may want to rethink those quiet days of nature gazing. Registration is now open for the 2012 Silicon Valley Networking Trip (sponsored by the Information Technology Advisory Board), which means a select number of students will get the chance to hang out in the sunny Bay Area, networking with alumni and execs at some of the biggest and best, including––yep––Apple and Google. If you'd like to be one of them, act fast.

An Exit Interview with Rep. David Dreier

...That was the headline for the Oct. 10 article in the Los Angeles Times featuring an interview with CMC Trustee David Dreier '75, Chairman of the House Rules Committee. Staff writer Patt Morrison introduced the interview by recalling how Dreier was just 26, still living in a dorm at CMC, and working for the College as an administrator, when he first ran for Congress in 1978. In February, Dreier announced he would not seek re-election, ending a three-decade-long career with the House of Representatives.
