As most of the world watched the duel between President Barack Obama and Republican-challenger Mitt Romney on Election Day, Steve Bullock '88 was at the center of another important battle in his home state of Montana. In a contentious, nail-biter characterized by the Helena Independent Record as a "slugfest," the Democratic first-term attorney general defeated former GOP Congressman Rick Hill to take the Montana governor's office vacated by term-limited Brian Schweitzer, a fellow Democrat. While CMC alumni are in legislative posts at many levels of the U.S. government, Bullock is the first to occupy the gubernatorial mansion.

    Election Night at the Athenaeum
Admit it: The menu had you curious. Ann Romney's Meat Loaf Cakes. Snowmageddon mashed potatoes. Deep-dish Chicago-style pizza. And, oh yes, apple pie. Roberts Fellow, and Associate Professor of Government Kenneth Miller.

  Is Our Government Broken?
TEDx Claremont was an inspirational and informative event, held Sept. 29, 2012, and a number of prominent speakers addressed the Claremont community about a variety of crucial issues. In her speech, Diane Halpern, professor of psychology at Claremont McKenna College, revealed her perspective on the current state of American politics. She said that the nation is in a political gridlock, in which Republicans and Democrats view each other as adversaries, and cooperation is completely out of the question. Halpern's speech was particularly relevant in light of the recent presidential election.

    Bring it on Home
The William Wagner memorial picnic area at the northeast corner of Zinda Field was the site of this year's CMS Homecoming Tailgate party, where alumni and parents mingled over savory BBQ and family-friendly activities before the football game against the Chapman Panthers. A wide array of activities was scheduled around the main event, including alumni basketball games and "friendly" flag football. Other varsity athletics, including the SCIAC Men's Soccer Tournament final against Whittier, captured the attention of many students and visitors. Spirits on campus were high as everyone enjoyed an eventful afternoon.

Camp Rock, CMC Style:
Jon Huntsman Jr.
Huntsman, a rock star? Judging by the way CMCers camped in tents on Nov. 1 outside the Athenaeum just to get a spot at the head table with the former presidential nominee hopeful, governor and ambassador, um, yeah, you'd think so. It's a true story, and also very telling of the kind of politically active students that Claremont McKenna attracts. Read what a few of them had to say about their Huntsman camping adventure.

This year, Rudi Smith '63, Frank Meyers '62, Bob Anderson '64 and Jeff Smith '65 led their brothers back to campus and took every opportunity to reach out to current students (and the Chapman cheerleaders).
